Dying for a Living by Kory M. Shrum

4.0

I'm not a fan of zombies, but - as Jesse insists - necronites aren't zombies. In a near future a genetic quirk has 1 in a million people born with the ability to regenerate after death. It's brain driven, so serious head trauma can't be reversed. Even more importantly, necronites can use their abilities to save someone dying. They die in the process, but then regenerate. In this brave new world, the government oversees the business of 'death replacement', where psychics foresee a death and necronites step in to save the soon to die (for a fee). It's a strange dystopian world that gets stranger when Jesse, and those she holds dear, are threatened by a serial killer targeting necronites. A fascinating read, it gets bogged down in a few places with drawn out relationship angst - yes there is a love interest - and Jesse's internal baggage. Overall, a different and interesting read.
