Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler
4.0

Okay. The only reason I'm rating this book so high is because the writing is really, truly beautiful. The illustrated components are also stunning, and I think the whole thing has a really nice tone to it that works well with the plot itself.

That being said, I think there's something... lacking, here. Min is an interesting character and though I don't love the "best friend in love with the protagonist who's dating the asshole jock" trope, in this case, I dealt with it. I think it would have been significantly more interesting to see more with Al, though. While I did have a grudging fondness for Ed at certain points (though most of the time I wondered what she saw in him at all, making me wonder how she made the choice to give him so much of herself), I just wanted more. I wanted a stronger sense of caring and more of a basis for those feelings.

All in all, Why We Broke Up is a read that I powered through with a great protagonist and a hell of a lot of beautiful imagery. But it didn't sparkle as much as I wanted it to. Not even close.
