Quick note: I'm so tired writing this right now it surely won't be an eloquent collection of thoughts. TLDR? If you're disappointed with the first book in this series, don't give up before giving this one a try. It's so fun and interesting.
I read this book on and off over the course of about three months, which usually takes me out of a story, but with this one, I was always able to jump right back in. Honestly, yes it's cheesy, yes at times I just want to yell at these characters to stop being horny when they shouldn't be, but! it is a thoroughly entertaining read.
The introduction of the third person POV was really interesting; I usually hate books with alternating POVs, but here, I didn't mind it at all. Maybe just because Roger is so mild and pleasant as a limited third person focus character. It's cool to see Claire through someone else's eyes, though, and especially in such an important moment when her honesty and soundness of mind is being questioned. It allowed for a little extra suspense.
A lot of my issues with the first book - mainly pacing stuff - were totally resolved in this one. Gabaldon's structure is way stronger, and, as an historian of the time, the political intrigue and war story portions of the book were so gripping to me. I had a few little issues (I don't like how all the information from the first book was repeated every time it came up; yeah, these books are long, but the story is memorable! Trust the reader to know what you're talking about) but they didn't bother me that much at all while reading.
Even with the cliffhanger ending, I probably won't read [b:Voyager|10987|Voyager (Outlander, #3)|Diana Gabaldon|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1483278195l/10987._SY75_.jpg|1131570] for a while(other books are higher up on my TBR list) but I can say with certainty that I'll definitely read on in the series, and also that I can't wait to.
