The Mysterious Affair at Styles
by Agatha Christie
Agatha Christie is truly a talented author. This was the first murder mystery I have read, and I must say it exceeded my expectations. I loved the perspective that the story was told from. It was not told from the detective's point of view, but rather the sidekick's. This allowed for the reader to feel more apart of the story and feel like they were solving the mystery right alongside the characters, whereas if it had been told from the detective's point of view the answers would have been freely given. This kept me very engaged in the book, and kept me guessing. The reader is presented with almost all the evidence, but the Belgian detective Poirot does not reveal who it is that committed the crime until the end of the book. It is possible for the reader to deduce from the evidence who is guilty, but Christie does an excellent job of dropping false leads that keep readers on their toes.
All in all, this is a very good book. It was an excellent introduction to mysteries. I gave it four out of five stars because I was slightly confused towards the beginning of the book. This is because I did not know how to read mysteries, and had trouble keeping track of all the evidence and characters. Towards the middle of the book, I was able to sort it out. Now that I know how to read mysteries, I will certainly be reading all of the other books Christie wrote.
