With all the five-star reviews, I was expecting something very different than what I got. Almost all the stories felt identical: a woman pinning over a man who doesn’t want her or a man that she can’t have, and it started to get a little boring. The short stories were too short to effectively relate to the characters or plot and the longer stories were too long to keep my attention.
I do like how Cisneros discussed themes of identity, feminism, and women’s roles in society, but they weren’t discussed at any length to make the stories feel like they were offering a unique or new commentary on those subjects. I did think the writing was nice, but that doesn’t change the fact that the content matter didn’t do it for me.
