The Nest by Kenneth Oppel
5.0

Honestly, I don't know how to rate this one. As an adult, I expected to be creeped out more but if I had read this as a child I probably would have never left the house again. It certainly has its moments.

Absolutely memorable, will never look at wasps the same way again! I think it handled mental health very well. It reminded me of A Monster Calls (Patrick Ness) as Steve deals with family stress, grief, mental health, etc. I could never get a good grasp on Steve's age - he's old enough to be left home alone as well as being alone with the ailing newborn, but there is a babysitter for the sister?? He's past fifth grade, so maybe middle grade but I don't think I would give this to a child to read, depends on the maturity of the child. In all, a 4-star read for me with a bonus star for the illustrations which helped the creepy factor.
