The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

Review of: "The song of Achilles"

I didn't picked this book up yet because i was scared that i won't find it original enough since i mostly don't enjoy reading retelling stories.

I'm interested in Greek mythology. So i decided to give this book a go. It was also the first book that i read by Madeline Miller

We are traveling back in time towards Greece during the time of honour and heroes. We meet Patroclus who is exiled by his own family. King Peleus takes him under his wing. The son of King Peleus is Achilles. Achilles and Patroclus meet each other in king Peleus his palace. They spend their teenage years together and slowely a great bond is formed between the both of them.

Years pass by and they grow up into young strong men. Their bond transfers from friendship into deep love. To great abhorrence of the mother of Achilles the sea goddess named Thetis who wish her son to be the greatest of all time.

The world from the couple in love is throwed upside down when Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped. Achilles and Paroclus choise to fight against the Trojans in the war. Troy have many dark sides more then the both of them expected in forehand and the war takes precious years of their lives.

I started to get into the story after the first 50 pages. The start was a bit of slow paced in my point of view.
I enjoyed the storyline till page 200. The world building was really interesting and unique compared to the other books that i read so far. It felt like if there where sparkles of magic and love sparkles all over the book pages.

Then unfortunately i lost interest. The world building in the last part of the book when the characters where located in Troy wasn't that great in my point of view i couldn't imagine what i was reading anymore. The end was beautifully written.

This book is a standalone which i see as a plus point.
