12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos
by Jordan B. Peterson
This book — because it contains so many of Peterson’s key talking points about responsibility, suffering, tradition, religion, mythology, and psychology — is in many ways a summation of his life philosophy. I’m very thankful for Peterson and this book. As a Christian I would obviously have critiques of some of his biblical interpretation, such as with regard to the Fall (although, in a recent conversation on his show, I thought he provided a much better assessment of what the tree of the knowledge of good and evil means than he did in the book).
However, I believe Peterson has exerted a genuine and remarkably positive influence on thousands or millions of people, particularly young men. Many think he is over-concerned about totalitarianism and related issues, but I think he has put a finger on what many turn a blind eye toward. We can only pray that he follows his wife in believing that the narrative world and the objective world have collided (to use his language) and that Jesus isn’t only the archetypal man but also the true Son of God. My wife and I are very thankful for Peterson and his stand for truth and taking on responsibility, especially in an age when it often feels absent. As a longtime listener and follower, I’m very excited to see him speak on Monday in Fort Worth!
“And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, ‘You are not far from the kingdom of God.’” Mark 12:34
