Twelve Steps to Normal by Farrah Penn
4.0

I absolutely loved this book! There were moments in just the first few chapters that already began to tug at my heartstrings, and that feeling only grew from there. One thing I love most about this book was how well-written Farrah's characters were. I felt as though they were people I went to high school with and would've been friends with too. Although, I will admit that Whitney and Jay had to do some growing on me. And don't even get me started about Alex! He was definitely one of my favorite characters and someone that I wish I knew in real life. The housemates were also pretty amazing characters. In some ways I wished each one had a little more detail to their background stories, because the way she wrote them made me want to know more. However, the author gives you just enough to know that each one has struggled in some profound way and the fact that they're still there is an amazing gift.

I also really loved the messages that this book had contained within it. Friendship, forgiveness, second chances, grief, redemption, love, and taking ownership of one's self were all things that I really thought about while reading this book. It also reminded me of the shortness of life and to live each day to the fullest. The subject of alcoholism contained in this book I think also gave a different perspective to the struggle. So often we see and hear the negative stories associated with alcoholism. I liked that this book had a hopeful message instead. It showed that even our hardest struggles and deepest hurts can turn into something beautiful, even if it's not exactly what we had planned.
