A key word missing from the description is that this world includes MAGIC. They are not pirates in the typical way, the characters use that to distinguish themselves from a separate magical group that calls themselves "witches." I think a lot of the baffled reviews would have benefited from the word "magic" in the synopsis.
This book is a chaotic witchy romance with a side of thievery and shenanigans. It's silly and fun and what I imagine an adhd brain looks like personified in fiction. I got about half of the regency era literature jokes but I'm not well read on the Brontë sisters.
