“Stigma is a way of saying, "You deserved to have this happen," but implied within the stigma is also, "And I don't deserve it, so I don't need to worry about it happening to me." This can become a kind of double burden for the sick: In addition to living with the physical and psychological challenges of illness, there is the additional challenge of having one's humanity discounted.”

“I have often struggled to take the medication that keeps me alive. […] maybe stigma has something to do with it—I feel like I am dependent upon the drugs, like I am not self-sufficient in the way that I am supposed to be. He encouraged me to think of my family, and my future, when taking the medicine. I encouraged him to do the same.”

I didn’t expect a book about tuberculosis to resonate so deeply with me, but there’s something to be said about stigma and how it affects everyone who deals with illness, mental or physical.
