Rabbit-Proof Fence: The True Story of One of the Greatest Escapes of All Time by Doris Pilkington, Nugi Garimara

5.0

This is an incredible story of 3 young Aboriginal girls who travelled 2500km across the scorching Australian outback in order to find the families they were unfairly taken from in 1931.

When you hear of this story, it is utterly astonishing to learn of the both the events leading up to the girls removal, their time spent at a government camp forced to learn domestic duties and then, their escape and trek all whilst dodging the white authorities trying to capture them again.

Barefoot, hungry and surviving the various dangers of the land, these 3 girls were fueled by the prospect of being reunited with their families again. I can only imagine the shock and surprise of their mothers when they walked through the door after being taken from them and believing they will never see their daughters again.

This book really shows the devastation, loss and heartbreak of having a child forcibly taken from a mother and the lengths that a child will go to, to return to where she truly belongs.
