The Burning God by R.F. Kuang
4.0

4.5 ⭐️ The way I knew how the book was going to end and I still cried. This series feels like it has taken some years off my life but I couldn’t put it down. It has been unlike anything I’ve ever read. Everything about it was so raw and so so emotional.

Rin was a character who can be easily hated. She was impulsive, reckless, cruel, at times absolutely crazy. But I couldn’t help to keep rooting for her. Her methods were insane but I did want her to succeed. There was something about her that I loved. She never would let go of her pride even till the moment she died. She cast away human life so easily. She didn’t care about anything except power. Even her death was on her own terms. But there was something so refreshing about that.

Kitay, the man you are. The love of my life. He had the most patience I’ve ever seen in a man. His relationship with Rin was the definition of undying loyalty. Underneath all the death and fights, there was something so powerful, so sweet about them. They loved each other but it wasn’t romantic, I’d say it was so much more than that. I’ve never read about two people who always had each other’s back and who cared about each other so much. It broke my heart when he gave her permission to end both their lives. It broke my heart to know that they couldn’t live without each other.

Nezha, why did he have to be such a morally gray character? I wanted to hate him so bad but I can’t. I wish I could’ve got more intel on him this book though that’s how war is. You don’t know what the enemy is planning. His relationship with Rin was a dynamic one. This wasn’t a simple enemies to lovers. Honestly, they didn’t even make it to lovers, which is why it was so heartbreaking! Never in this universe did I think for a second they could be peacefully together.

“You can’t do this for me,” he said. “I won’t let you.”
“It’s not for you. It’s not a favor. It’s the cruelest thing I could do.”

Why don’t you just rip my heart out? But the fact that he was the one who ended up killing her is something that needed to happen. I wouldn’t have accepted anything else.

Lastly, the cycle of the Trifecta had me fucked up. The parallels of Daji, Riga, and Jiang and Rin, Nezha, and Kitay. Then Rin chose to break the cycle with the death of her and Kitay. I can’t!! Their friendship with one another was so so sad!!! How they couldn’t go back to the way it was but they had pockets of time where they would just sit down, talk and enjoy each other’s presence till the next moment they meet ready to kill each other. AND THE FACT THAT THEY DIDN’T EVEN WHEN THEY HAD SO MANY CHANCES TO. BECAUSE THEY LOVED EACH OTHER!

As a final goodbye to this series, I wanted to give it its flowers. Definitely not for the faint of heart but it had some of the most fleshed out characters I’ve ever read. Did it have flaws? Of course. But it’s about humans, shamans, and warring countries reflecting on real world events. It wouldn’t mean as much if there weren’t flaws.
