Came to this book in the same bin of books that were packed up from my Mom's bookshelves after her passing in 2009. The bin sat idle in storage for 10 years and this book was on the top of the recently unveiled bin.
I knew of author Kadohata from my previous days in the film industry (a colleague had optioned her first novel, The Floating World) but hadn't read this novel.
I have two daughters, about the same age spread as the girls in this book, so reading Kadohata's words were familiar and comforting. Also being J/A with a strong sense of the history, situations and customs the families deal with, made the short read all the more unifying.
The question being, can readers who aren't as intimate with the characters, customs and history of the subjects enjoy the story?
I think so. The joys and pains of family are universal. Dive in.
