The Winners by Fredrik Backman
4.0

Backman is such a masterful developer of characters. One would think that with all of the early foreshadowing of what's to come (his signature move in this trilogy), one could adequately prepare one's heart for the utter devastation that is to come. But....nope. The last 30 pages still rip your heart out while simultaneously stitching it back together.

I struggled with a full five star rating because there were story lines that could've been cut (the book is 671 pages) or at least minimized. I found myself trying to get through those fast, so I could get to the characters and stories that I was more invested in. Simply put, it made the middle of the book feel a bit cluttered. That's certainly not a reason to pass this one up though, especially if you want to know how the series ends.
