Takes a coincidence of time & location in the mid-30’s and tries to fold it into a story; unfortunately, the overlap just isn’t there to form a coherent narrative. This really should’ve been two books: one about the Black Legion campaign of covert political terror across Michigan & Ohio and the other about Detroit’s incredible success bringing three sport championships home in one season. The former is as relevant today as it was 86 years ago and deserves to be analyzed accordingly. The latter would be a more standard sports book.

I won’t go into any detail now but the parallels between the Black Legion of the 1930’s and today’s right-wing militia groups is an uncanny example of history repeating.
