How to Get Away with Marriage by Fenna Edgewood

4.0

How to Get Away with Marriage is a book that incorporates an ensemble cast of characters. They are people who come from all over-from Mayfair all the way into the heart of London’s less affluent neighborhoods.

In this particular book we are first introduced to Hugh Cavendish and Beatrice Weston. The two are brought together when Hugh must quickly find a fake fiancé to satisfy his Aunt Agatha’s wishes and extinguish his father’s financial woes. When he comes upon Beatrice “Triss” Weston he finds that she is perfect for the role. What ensues is a quick whirlwind into attraction and affection between the two of them as they convince the ton that they are betrothed.

I was surprised that while the fake fiancé trope was my main pull to this story, it did not play out very long as far as what was written versus implied. I also liked the foil of Lady Edith and her vindictiveness. It is always fun to have a villainess, and it was interesting to have her point of view,
which makes sense since she is a secondary character with an arc that continues into the next book.

I enjoyed how this story touched upon societies treatment of Jewish people in that time period and culture. I also like all of the secondary characters who seem to have interesting stories that look to be expounded upon in upcoming books in the series.

While this book had some telling and not showing and multiple side stories to distract from the main love story, it still worked for me on an entertainment level. I look forward to reading more of Fenna Edgewood and seeing how she redeems Lady Edith!
