Fifth Grave Past the Light
by Darynda Jones
This is book number five in the Charley Davidson series, and her life hasn’t slowed down at all. She begins the novel working as a private investigator for a women convinced her husband is cheating on her. While the subject doesn’t take Charley’s bait, Cookie is an entirely different story. The situation turns awry, as many do that involve both Charley and Cookie. Charley demands that Cookie take a class on gun training with family friend, Noni. She’s a danger to them all.
Things really heat up between Reyes and Charley, now that he is living next door. Also, Charley really loves Reyes’s shower, which she has named George. Also, the mystery about what she will name her sofa has been solved, but I will let you discover that on your own.
Aside from the adulterer, Charley has another case that has made it’s way to her in a bit of an odd manner. Her apartment is full of dead women, well their ghosts anyway. All different ages and ethnicities , but all blonde. It seems this could be the work of a serial killer, who has been active for many years now.
Charley receives a visit from a dead nurse, claiming her family needs help finding her body. The strange thing is, the woman is still alive…
Captain Eckert has taken an interest in watching Charley work, insisting he wants to know her secrets. How can she solve several cold cases in one afternoon?
Garret is a wealth of information now, as well. It seems somebody has been doing his research. We learn more about his family’s past, too.
There are so many different threads in this novel, as per usual with the Charley Davidson novels. Even when the action is slow, there is usually something important going on, and several surprises as well. I love the ending. It seems this might be the one time, Charley doesn’t have something smart to say.
