i loved this short story/novella! it really packed a lot of emotion into quite a short length, in that quietly beautiful and subtle way that is characteristic of claire keegan. i need to read more of her short stories because she is truly a master at exploring characters in a limited space. i also want to watch the adaptation of this, especially if it's even nearly as good as the adaptation of small things like these, which was as beautiful and atmospheric as the book.
i already feel like i need to reread this novella so i can enjoy the nuances more; the single sitting it took to read this wasn't enough. it was just as haunting as small things like these, but i think her sheer ability to fit so much into such a small book tips foster over the edge just a little. either way, i know i'll be thinking about both of them for a long time.
