Audio narrator elevates this.  Did not like the first person narrator.

re: the romance

First time I've read a love triangle, got a throuple, and been disappointed in it.  Narrator spent too long angsting about the choice and the relationship between two sides of the triangle was not developed enough.

re: racism

while he comes back/isn't really dead, the graphic description of the only character of colour's corpse felt gratuitious even in the context of a pretty gruesome gothic story
