The Mothers by Brit Bennett
1.0
Kindle ebook
Hmm, ok, the writing was pretty good, but I just couldn’t like this book. The messages were just bad.
I think it did a disservice to black teens & it was written like an anti-abortion pamphlet.
The “church mothers” were self-serving, gossiping, busybodies that we’ve been told all our lives are good, Christian women. Who wants to live life in a place where the few judge you for what they consider your failings & the many just agree with them blindly. I’ve met these women in every church I’ve attended, they are poison.
How are you going to tell a young girl that because she had an abortion & her mom unalived herself, she will never find peace & happiness, but the father of the baby will be just fine?! This is the wrong message to send to teens. You don’t want your kid to have an abortion? You teach them safe sex. If they still get pregnant, you have already shown them your beliefs all their lives, you have to let them (both) make their own choices. This kid paid for the abortion & then feels guilty? Stop.
This whole book is anti-woman. The church biddies, the mother who died, the teen girl, even the best friend who had been raped got a lousy hand in the end. But the boy was just fine. Gross.
