I wanted to give this a 3...
But there’s just so much here. This is the first time we’re Rachel and maybe it’s because I know how this all ends, but its interesting to dive into a female mind after the first book is about Jake.
It’s not fair to compare these to Goosebumps as these are totally different beasts but ultimately they were aimed at the same group of kids.
I think my favorite thing is the tid bits we learn about each animal as our hero borrows their DNA. It’s not deep but it adds depth to the experience.
In comparison to book 1 this doesn’t add a lot. Instead we learn motives for a few humans who are under control and the toll it takes on those around them.
In a normal YA tale this would have been glossed over but instead it’s the main focus of the tale.
I almost wish I didn’t know how this s AS LP ends but nothing I can do about that.
