My Mad Fat Diary: A Memoir by Rae Earl

emotional funny hopeful medium-paced

3.5

Since this is pulled directly from a diary, it's hard to pass any moral judgments on it - this is the true story of a fat teenage girl in 1989, dealing with the world as it was then & all of the crap our society was. Yes, there's internalized fatphobia that goes unexamined. Yes, there's internalized misogyny. Yes, Rae should have definitely been seeing a regular therapist instead of just getting spat out from her hospice stint. But it's also bitingly funny and sweet and real. That's what we asked it to be.
