It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover

5.0

Don’t go into this book thinking it’s romance, it’s not.
I thought this book was going to be completely different. I thought it was going to be one of those classic love triangle rom-coms (this is also the first Colleen Hoover book I’ve ever read and had no idea what to expect) in which Lily has started her life with a seemingly perfect guy, but Atlas somehow reappears in her life and it seems fate is bringing them together. BOY WAS I WRONG! This book was heartbreaking and was a tornado of emotions in just the first part of the book. The second part was a hurricane.

With the idea that this was a cheesy love triangle situation, I was so confused why Lily would even consider Atlas when Ryle was so perfect. He was changing for her and I didn’t want her to break his heart. It made no sense to me. I had stopped reading on my first day literally pages before the kitchen incident. I had even told my coworker that I’m team Ryle and I’d didn’t want Atlas in the picture. Not that I didn’t like Atlas, i love the idea of Lily helping him when he’s homeless, but I wanted that story to be separate from the love story of Lily and Ryle. I read the kitchen incident scene during my break at work and immediately texted my coworker that I take back everything I said about Ryle. I even felt embarrassed that I was team Ryle, but I understand that was the point. You don’t know an abuser right away.

This book was so hard to read. I read it in a few days, but constantly put it down for a few minutes during the tough scenes. Seeing her mom get abused, how Lily was following in her moms footsteps, her pregnancy, and the hard discussions with family. As hard as it was to watch Lily appear to be going back to Ryle, it also made it very clear the thought process some women may go through when in these situations. This book is very important for women (anyone really) to read. Life doesn’t always turn out how you plan, even if you could never see yourself in those situations.

The last few sentences of the book absolutely broke me. “It stops here. With me and you. It ends with us.” I thought it was called IEWU because Lily and Atlas ended up together after all this time (again a cheesy love triangle trope). I love that she ended the cycle for her daughter. It was never about Lily and Ryle or Lily and Atlas, it was about her daughter. Everything to make sure her daughter lived a better life.
