Plot or Character Driven: Character

Revisiting books you read as a teenager can be so strange.

I remember this as being adventurous. Reading it as an adult I'm kind of disturbed. It feels more like someone joining a cult. And I think that's intentional.

The inevitability of dementia. The straight up addiction. Killashandra's total lack of empathy towards others. She says she has a family and siblings right at the beginning, then runs off to place she may never be able to leave without even talking to them or thinking about them. She has a personal recorder to try to help stave off the mental issues but she uses it to record only facts, never anything emotional or related to people, which you'd think would be the things you'd really want to remember.

Killashandra just isn't very likeable in this one. She comes across as arrogant, spoilt and lacking in compassion. I remember liking the second book in the series far more, but we shall see.

Also, the men in this book need to stop just touching her all the time when they've only just met. From a modern perspective, it felt really creepy.
