Much about this book is unexpected. It manages to tell a story about man who isn't very likeable and who takes little action to direct his own life and it inspires empathy. His inaction and willingness to go along with whatever others' request of him feel realistic and worthy of our examination. There is so much about the construction of this book that is just a little bit different from what I expect. It makes it a fun read and it helps me to see what my own reading expectations are and how they may limit my enjoyment sometimes. Not this time!
