Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart
sad
2.5
OK, so I've read a lot of critiques about "A Little Life" being a kind of tragedy porn, but as someone who likes heavy and emotional fiction I still liked that book. It had something to say about the beauty of life within the tragedy and had complex characters. To me, Shuggie Bain felt like just tragedy for the sake of tragedy. There didn't seem to be a point or any hope to any of it. Also, it felt a little two-dimensional. There was nothing left unsaid, you never had to wonder what a character thought or felt or think about their motivations because it was written out clearly on the page.
