wow. just wow. i don’t have the words to exclaim how much i love this book, and i’m currently sitting in shock. i’ve never seen myself reflected more in a character before, and i’ve never seen my home reflected more in the setting. a queer autistic character in a small, appalachian town? sign me up.
this book is a love letter to appalachian and southern culture, no matter how shitty things may be. for many queer people, places like these are where we belong. they’re broken, the water don’t always work. and, you might need to jump your car using grandpa’s pickup truck. but, it’s still home.
andrew joseph white captures it all. the nitty and gritty. the social isolation for being different. the notion family that loves you, even if they don’t always get it. i found myself in love with every single detail, and i found myself in every single word.
