Melena's Jubilee: The Story of a Fresh Start by Zetta Elliott

4.0

the message of this picture book is sorely needed in a culture that likes to keep score and perpetually punish people. Melena wakes up expecting to still be in trouble only to find that her mama and gramma have forgiven her. She takes that unexpected joy of grace and extends it to others around her. I especially recommend you read the author's note about the historical significance of jubilee for African Americans. I had to chuckle that two of the 7 suggestions for a fresh start day include returning late books to the library and paying off late fees.
