The Identicals
by Elin Hilderbrand
I'm marking this one a little lower than I typically mark Hilderbrand's work because I detest the Parent Trap storyline (in what world does that custody arrangement make sense or seem humane?!), but I do give her props for using that storyline as an allegory for the relationship between Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. That being said, it's very clear that she is Team Nantucket--I've always wanted to visit the Vineyard but do not want to based on this book (the traffic and taxi situation sounds horrendous, but surely Nantucket has these issues too?). There were a few characters who I found to be pretty flat and difficult to understand (Sadie, Reed, Franklin, etc.) and the characters I did empathize with still did some pretty ridiculous things (planting cocaine on a romantic rival, cough cough). I'm still glad I read it and per usual, enjoyed my romp through Nantucket, but this one was ultimately a bit too far-fetched for me.
