The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists by Robert Tressell

4.0

Well this both blew my mind and utterly depressed me. The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists on the face of it, tells the story of a gang of Edwardian labourers, their lives and politics. But on a deeper level it’s a commentary of the plight of the working classes, the eternal struggle to survive and the manipulation, subjugation and degradation at the hands of the middle and upper classes. It’s a love song to socialism which is fascinating and depressingly still highly accurate (with the current sleezy shitbags in Westminster doing fabulous impressions of the villains of the piece). Well worth a read if only to give you a little reassurance that the world has always been as utterly batshit politically as it is right now.
