The Man Burned by Winter
by Pete Zacharias
A really engaging and fast paced mystery thriller… until the 3rd part. It was dark, gritty and I was totally sucked in reading about Harlow, Rooker, the case, and Rooker’s past and his father but then the last act felt so sloppily thrown together and pulling threads from all different directions. There also also a lot of arbitrary sexual bullshit like Rooker sleeping with Evelyn - which was just weird? And Rooker and Harlow having a random hook up even though he was her primary murder suspect for a lot of the book? The the random perspectives from totally arbitrary characters felt totally random. Overall a dark suspenseful ride with a hefty dose of murder, rape, police procedure and flawed characters. Overall a 3. This definitely could have been tightened up to be an incredible read.
