The Ruins
by Scott Smith
dark
mysterious
tense
This book was horrifying and intense in the kind of way that makes you think about your own mortality. I listened to the audio for this one read by Patrick Wilson and I think he did an excellent job with the delivery because he conveyed the sense of utter devastation these characters felt as they tried to navigate their situation. This book asks the hard questions- what would you be willing to do in the face of death and survival? How far would you go?
I really liked it, I think my biggest beef was with the writing of the two female characters and how they were portrayed against the male characters, BUT I also felt like all the characters were written in a way that brought balance to the mentality of the group. I can see the thinking with the way each person was constructed and the role they were meant to fill for the sake of the story.
If you liked The Troop or The Deep by Nick Cutter, you will probably also enjoy this. It was atmospheric, haunting, and really made me think and I appreciate that in a story that is meant to horrify the reader.
