Laughing at My Nightmare by Shane Burcaw

Did not finish book.
Ugh I hate that I have to DNF this. So here’s what I’m gonna say. This book is wonderful if you want some insight on what it can be like for people with physical disabilities. It goes into how poorly he was treated at times and how he had a warped view of other people who use wheelchairs and how he even had his own stereotypes despite using a wheelchair himself. I had to DNF this because of his comments on people with mental disabilities. Do I think he still has the same thoughts today? No. But this was published in 2014, and humor and discussions around disabilities was not what it is today. Also when he talks about his experiences with people with disabilities other than his own, it was him talking about his experiences as a kid and sometimes I couldn’t tell if that’s what he currently felt or if that’s what he felt back then. You can tell by his narrative that the reason he spoke this way was because people saw him and saw the wheelchair and automatically assumed he needed to be treated differently, when really he’s just a dude in a wheelchair. So I think there’s a lot of reasons behind why there are problematic things in this book, but I still wouldn’t recommend it.
