The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

3.75

So I've finally read possibly the most celebrated book on TikTok. You can't scroll down BookTok without running into someone suggesting to read this, as well as some of TJR's other reads. The months-long wait from the queue on Libby finally got to me, and ultimately, I'm glad I read it.

Definitely, the draw to this book is the character of Evelyn, who is an interesting person. You certainly feel she is based on a real-life celebrity, and her story takes many twists and turns. The supporting cast in Evelyn's past (Celia, Harry, and others) is also fairly interesting, with their own motivations and part to play in Evelyn's story. I did enjoy the love story between Celia and Evelyn. However, I'm not sure Monique's side of the story holds its own. It seems Reid is trying to draw a parallel in Evelyn's and Monique's lives, that I'm not sure works for me. At the end, when we discover the big twist, we don't really get enough of Monique's father for this to be a watershed moment; I think Monique's confrontation with her ex-husband is more effective, but still doesn't leave much of an impact on me. However, some of the lines within the story, especially regarding Evelyn's relationship with Celia, Harry, and Connor, plus Monique's relationship with her mother, definitely rings very true.

Overall, I enjoyed this book.
