In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado

challenging dark emotional sad tense medium-paced

5.0

Carmen Maria Machado is an incredible writer. Dream House is one of the best books I've ever read. As a primarily before-bedtime reader, Dream House made it hard for me to get to sleep most nights.

Dream House centers on patterns of emotional abuse and manipulation, specifically within a queer relationship, that often hit too close to home for me. For anyone worried about starting the book for similar reasons, I can only say that Machado looks after her readers. The book is painful, but not callously so.

From a style standpoint, Dream House may hold the record for my favorite use of dramatic footnotes—and I love dramatic footnotes! The way Machado references the Thompson Motif-Index of Folk Literature is nothing short of showstopping.
