It Waits in the Woods
by Josh Malerman
It Waits in the Woods by Josh Malerman (the third story in the Creature Feature collection) is about Brenda, a young woman seeking answers in the dense Michigan woods three years after the disappearance of her younger sister in those same woods. Desperate for answers, she begins investigating a local legend involving haunting wails from deep in the woods and a bridge to nowhere with evil lurking on the other side.
This one is terrifying, you guys. Maybe it's just because I listened to the audio version (highly recommend, the narrator (Lauren Ezzo) really popped off, it's so good), but the creature in this one was so scary. The beginning is just a touch slow, but the moment Brenda sets foot in the woods the tension is high. Truly nauseating in the best way.
