Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut

4.0

In Breakfast of Champions, Kurt Vonnegut is, as always, irreverent and incredibly weird. Vonnegut keeps the reader very aware that this is a work of fiction. The author/narrator of the book is also a character in the book, but one who frequently reminds the reader that he created all the other characters with whom he interacts. Breakfast of Champions is far from a politically correct novel, but everything is coated in such a thick layer of irony that I found many things acceptable that may have ordinarily offended me. This book seemed to me to be some sort of a call for help by Vonnegut. His author/narrator/character pretty clearly suffers from mental illness, and I frankly worry about Vonnegut's well-being at the time of his writing the book, but he created something pretty amazing.
Not appropriate for children.
