The Family Chao by Lan Samantha Chang

The Family Chao did not do it for me... There was potential but it was hindered by the way Chang wrote her characters: they all fit into a very specific archetype, with no room for nuance and growth. There was the genius brother who wanted nothing to do with his family; the family disappointment who kept fucking up; and the goody two-shoes who can't tell a lie.

Also, this book was way too long! At least 1/3 of it could have been cut out without hurting the story. The trial coverage was excessive. (And using Lynn's blog as a narration device made for a cumbersome reading experience. You really expect me to believe that, in a journalism class, she talks about community members by their first names without introducing them?)

Wish I could have liked this one more, but unfortunately, it was a let-down.
