The Far West by Patricia C. Wrede

5.0

I've enjoyed this series. It's YA, with our heroine starting out as a kid and most of it taking place while she's a YA herself, but this volume has her as a working adult (though still PG-rated; Sergeant Amy helps keep it that way! I like Sergeant Amy!) and we have a satisfactory conclusion, though probably not a huge surprise to anyone who's been paying attention. The magical animals in this alternate history fantasy - where non-magical mammoths are still extant in the western hemisphere in the late 1800's - give it a neat twist.
