Lumberjanes: Unicorn Power! by Mariko Tamaki

5.0

When I picked this up at the used book store, I thought i was picking up the original graphic novel, which I haven’t read. This was, instead the first chapter book (with occasional illustration) about the continuing adventures of the Lumberjanes of Roanoke cabin.
This was probably the most feminist, most positive depiction of the varieties of ways to be a (young) woman of anything I have read recently. I was a little blown away, in fact, by all the ways, both overt and subtle, that girls were encouraged to follow their passions, be a girl in whatever way works for them. Bake cakes! Rock climb! Collect plants! Search for dragons! Carve wood! Invent things! Make plans! Make music! Forge a trail! Forge metal! Eat pancakes! It's all good.... and it blew me away.
