Smoke and Shadow, Part 1 by Bryan Konietzko, Michael Dante DiMartino, Gene Luen Yang

5.0

There is a soft spot in my heart for Avatar. I really enjoy the immersive world, ideas, culture, and stories that the comics and television show brings. This volume was not filled with twist and turns, or amazing revelations. It was, however, filled with great characters and development. It held the story together by providing the reader with an emotional investment in the people. There were several small intriguing storylines but most of them were not held together by some amazing new scope. They were held together by characters and setting. It enthralled me enough to keep reading to the second book and that is what its job was.

The art in this issues, as always, is superb. It follows exactly what we have come to expect from the series as a whole.
