Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

4.0

I loved the way this story was told! The reader knows where the author is taking them but the characters do not. Part of the joy of the story is following their journey to understanding, but because of that, it felt a little slow in some parts to me.

I highly recommended listening to this on audio!! Marcellus’ voice was brilliant. He is a poet. A posh, old soul who sounds semi-British. Maybe a bit snooty, but definitely kind hearted. Marin Ireland and Michael Urie did a fabulous job narrating these characters!

There was a quick reference to my hometown, Naples Florida, that made me smile. It made me wonder if the author has been here and wanted to sneak that into her story.

There were just a few things that kept this from being a five star read for me. And when I say this, these are very minor things, but they irked me just enough.

- Cameron, one of the main characters, behaved like he was a rebellious 15 year old, and he was supposed to be a 30 year old man! I mean, I understand the point of his character being the way he was, but I just had a hard time liking him.
- The author referred to characters “releasing the breath didn’t know they were holding” on three separate occasions. I feel like this phrase is so overused in general and to hear it three times in one book was a little much.
- The ending … let me start by saying I liked the ending. I did. BUT without giving anything away, I wish the last two chapters had been reversed. I wanted to know what happened with everyone, but I also wanted it to end with Marcellus’ POV. When the story kept going after his last scene, I was a bit disappointed. I would have given up knowing the outcome of all the characters to have the ending Marcellus gave us.
