Clipped Wings by Helena Hunting

5.0

5+++ #Cupcake Stars.

This is NOT just another story about a bad-boy tattoo artist and a young shy girl taking a walk on the wild side. Clipped Wings is the story of two people who have been shattered by the circumstances of their lives, Hayden and Tenley, and desperately need the connection that they've made to keep themselves moving forward in life.The story completely caught me off guard. The story-line is original and breathtakingly written. This is my first exposure to Helena Hunting and I am head over heals in love with her writing, the character development and the dialogue.

What surprised me about this story was the breadth and depth of the characters. Helena weaves a tale of two characters who are facing down loss, demons and insecurities. She puts them together in and brings them together through a slight twist of fate. Neither have developed very strong or stable coping skills so when they come together and expose the sweeter side of their emotions, they find in each other a way to quell the hurt and anger. Tenley is sweet and shy, but has some drive and feistiness that may be the only aspect of her personality that keeps her from completely isolating herself. Hayden is all alpha male and his declarations that Tenley is “mine,mine,mine” are born of Hayden’s need to protect her. I find these moments sweet and sexy and although it seems like it would be sexist and archaic, I thought it showed a tender side that Hayden has never been able to explore.

The plot really is centered around bringing the two together to fight these battles. But, its an angsty love story and as apparent it is that they are in love with each other and are good for each other, something had to give. They both withhold information about their pasts and this ends up costing them. They each lose a little trust in each other, because they each doubted that the other would understand their past. They were so afraid of hurting each other, of losing each other that the make a terrible mess of things.

The secondary characters; Lisa, Chris, Sarah, Cassie, Noah, and Trey all drive plot changes in the story-line. We watch as the friendship between Hayden and Chris morphs, and we have more than one villain to be wary of.

Helena is very skilled in writing erotica that the reader can feel the connection that sex forges between Tenley and Hayden. It is some of the steamiest and emotionally provoking scenes I've read in modern erotica.

I don’t always dive into the next book in a series and I hold off for different reasons. With Hayden and Tenley, I absolutely cannot wait to start Inked Armor. Maybe it was the gentle cliffhanger, but I am about to find why...
