Shadow Frost by Coco Ma

This is a beautiful book and a terrific lead into what promises to be a thrilling trilogy, and I have no doubt this author will go far in her career. I love the action, the elemental magic, and most of the relationships between the characters, who had distinct personalities. There were some truly great twists that I didn't see coming, and the ending leaves a huge cliffhanger to explore different worlds and realms, as well as develop the characters further.

I love elemental magic so it was fun to see this unique take on them, as well as the addition of less common elements. I would love to know more about the demons that live within it. Watching the magic in the action scenes added a layer of suspense and originality to the world.

There were so many characters to love and it's hard for me to pick just one. While Asterin was the primary hero, each of the other side characters got some time in the spotlight. I would definitely love to see more of Rose. I think she is a very strong character and would love to see where her story goes. While I did like many of the characters, I did think they had some flaws that kept them from completely adoring them. Asterin could be quite aggressive for no reason, Orion made a stupid decision at the end, and some of Luna's choices felt a bit forced/provided a needless drama.

I think that was one of my biggest issues with the book: There would be actions or choices that seemed to bait a little too much for the sequel when they could have been resolved. The banter was so much fun, but it also sounded a little too modern for my tastes. That kind of hindered me from seeing the characters as mature, especially when they are supposed to be powerful and mature. I felt like a few too many things needed to happen for the sake of the plot.

Not that I'm saying it's not worth your time. It absolutely is. I see so much potential for this series and author and if you are looking for someone who may be the next big voice in YA, this is an author who needs to be on your radar, especially if you're looking for a fun fantasy read.
