Fever by Deon Meyer
4.0
After a corona virus, called the Fever, kills the majority of the world’s population, a father and son are travelling together, trying to survive, and manage to gather a group of survivors wanting to build a new society. There are elements of The Stand and The Road, but it has no supernatural elements like the King novel, and is not nearly so bleak as the McCarthy. Instead, it is a cracking adventure, full of action, but also thought-provoking - on philosophy, climate, society - with endearing characters, and a wild and beautiful setting. It is probably the first book I have read that is translated from Afrikaans, and I found that fascinating, though I suspect I couldn’t do the audiobook; that’s a small doses accent for me. A post-apocalyptic thriller with heart and hope.
