The Ex Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon

4.0

4 stars.

okay, first off, where can i find myself my own personal dominic, because i want to wife this man up SO HARD, Y'ALL. get a guy who comes off as an asshole when you first meet him but actually is a puppy with a heart of gold. i also *adored* shay, she reflected so many of my insecurities as a late twenty-something (the need to accomplish something before you're thirty, not knowing how to properly adult because we're thrust into the school to work pipeline without any practical knowledge, not knowing how to make friendships outside of a school setting, etc.). put these two together, and you have a romance that's fun, flirty, but also deeply poignant and will tug at your heartstrings.

for a little background, dominic and shay work for the same radio station. when budget cuts threaten their jobs, they are thrust into a show of their own titled 'the ex talk,' where exes dominic and shay discuss their dating past, what went wrong, and try to help others navigate the world of love. the catch? dominic and shay aren't actually exes, it's all for show, but their constant bickering could easily be mistaken for jilted exes.

dominic and shay's chemistry is really what drove the story. these two are so dynamic together, i would totally listen to a radio show hosted by them. also, the story of dealing with grief and finding love again re: shay's mom and her stepdad was so beautiful, and the way that tied into shay's story was so well done.

the only reason i give this 4 stars instead of 5 is that while it was super cute and i loved so much of it, i just couldn't get over the ending feeling super rushed?
Spoiler between the five-second break up, PodCon-gate, the *actual* breakup, and dominic's grand romantic gesture to get shay back? it all happened so quickly that it felt like whiplash, even though it's noted that several months have passed between it all. idk it's a small thing, but enough of a thing that it bothered me a bit.
other than that though, if you're looking for a soft enemies to friends to lovers, this is *chef's kiss* everything you want.
