Pretty Deadly, Vol. 1: The Shrike by Kelly Sue DeConnick
5.0
Between her run on Captain Marvel and this book, Kelly Sue DeConnick has become one of my favorite comic writers. Pretty Deadly creatively mixes the western with the supernatural, two genres that rarely meet in such an exquisite way. In only five issues DeConnick weaves an elaborate tale that harkens to both the fairy tale and the oral storytelling tradition that is so embedded in the history of the wild west. This story, driven by its compelling and unique characters, hooked me with its nested form of storytelling that hints at a much larger world and a legacy that lives on beyond both its heroes and villains.
Emma Rios brings her marvelous art to the table as well, with unique layouts and beautiful detail. She creates incredible landscapes that contribute to the vastness of the story and the repercussions of the action Rios so brilliantly illustrates.
One must also recognize Jordie Bellaire, whose gorgeous color pallets complement whatever action or emotion is occurring within the panels.
