The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever
by Julia Quinn
It’s been a really long time since I’ve read a Julia Quinn novel. I’m talking years. I got out of the habit of reading historical romance a while back, and just never really picked it back up. However, since this year is the year that I’m trying to really put a dent in my shelves, I wanted to start reading some of her backlist. The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever has been sitting on my shelves for a very long time. In fact, I actually dug it out of the donate bin in order to read it, and now that I have, it’s staying on the shelves because I really enjoyed this one, and Miranda might just be one of my favorite historical characters.
Miranda Cheever is different. She’s not the “typical” regency beauty, with her dark hair, and brown eyes. She’s never really fit in with her peers, and would rather just spend her time reading or with her best friend Olivia. When Miranda ten years old, she’s insulted at a birthday party by one of the other little girls, and it solidifies what she already knows. She will never be beautiful or pretty. However, when Viscount Turner takes her home that day, he gives her a word of advice that sticks with her for a very long. It’s the day she falls in love for the first time, and the day she starts to write her first journal.
As Miranda gets older, she continues to love Turner, even when he marries someone else. However, after the death of his wife, Turner returns to his family home, and there he cannot avoid Miranda. Soon it becomes clear that Turner and Miranda are walking a tight rope when it comes to their relationship, and they no longer can deny their attraction to each other. But Turner has been burned before, and it’s clear that it will take quite a bit for him to admit his love to Miranda.
I adore Julia Quinn, and think that her historical books are some of the most well written novels out there. I adore his characters, and his female characters are full of tons of spunk and sass. Miranda was a great example of that, and I adored her character. Turner though, was a little bit too angry for my historical tastes, and I was frustrated by how long it took him to finally come around and realize his feelings for Miranda, but when he finally did, it was FANTASTIC!
Honestly, this was just an all around adore historical romance that I enjoyed so much, and I’m so glad I finally got to read it!
