Read for Popsugar: A book set in the wilderness

I had never heard of the maroon communities before this - rather than running north, escaped slaves would form pocket communities in inhospitable places like swamps where they avoided attempts at reclamation. It's interesting to see the author's imaginings of how they functioned, and I think it's a really original concept. The execution was a little less successful, though, in my opinion. The narrative was scattered across many different characters, which wa a little hard to keep track of, especially at the beginning.
